Mapping the Dayton Peace Accords

School of Knowledge: Mapping Dayton Peace Accords project can trace back its origins to 2000, when Miran Norderland and the FAMA Team obtained permission from Ambassador Richard Holbrooke and his publisher Random House to use his book “To End A War” for the creation of the FAMA Album: “The Dayton Peace Accords: Mapping Negotiations.” The objective of the project was to visualise and contextualise the road to Dayton by mappingout the U.S. Shuttle Diplomacy and Peace Proximity Talks in Dayton in a way that they could be accessible to a wide range audience.

dayton.famamethodology.net

Project is based on the book by Ambassador Richard Holbrook – To End a War. The objective was to map-out complex negotiations through illustrated chronology of the events that took place in 1995 across B&H, former Yugoslavia, Western Europe and the USA – eventually materializing in the Dayton Peace Accords and ending the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Album contains textual chronology and analysis of the events visualised through hand-drawn illustrations and provides behind-the-scene insight into U.S. diplomatic efforts to end a war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

At all stages of the siege we aimed to deal only with facts supported by the first-hand testimonies, and thus decided to include the Richard Holbrooke’s book To Finish the War into our archiving project. Thanks to the author, we were permitted to use dialogues and statements of the warring parties and the international community rallied around the project of ending the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which also ended the siege of Sarajevo. This map of the negotiations is the undisputable testimony of positions and objectives of all parties involved in the process of ending the war, as well on the final decisions that resulted in the Dayton Peace Agreement. Anyone involved in the revision or denial of this agreement should be aware of the facts which lead to the signing of the agreement i.e. how the war in B&H ended. This is also an important document on the balance of power on the international diplomatic, political, and military scene at the end of the 20th century, and on the functioning of the U.S. administration within their foreign policy objectives at the time. Finally, as the educational model for contemporaries and future generations, it is an essential part of our archive collection.

Srebrenica - Mapping Genocide and Post-Genocide Society

The knowledge of genocide is one of the most effective topics for examining fundamental moral issues and the structural study of human behavior. Thematic lectures and opening of dialogue strengthens reflection and builds awareness about the values of pluralism, encouraging acceptance of diversity in multinational and multicultural societies. As our contribution we are presenting the project/education pack “School of Knowledge: Srebrenica - Mapping Genocide and the Post-Genocide Society”, prepared in several formats: the video Documentary Animation, 38 minutes in length, is the fundamental item for mapping the genocide from early July 1995 to 19 July 1995. and a 60-minute video lecture consisting of two parts: mapping genocide and the post-genocide society. The lecture is based on the platform of the Documentary Animation and parts of the Public Lecture held on May 28, 2015 in Sarajevo. The lectures examined 12 aspects of genocide in Srebrenica and post-genocide society.

Srebrenica - Mapping Genocide

Project has been implemented for a year, upon completion of comprehensive research of available documents, testimonies, studies, books, movies, and photos. In order to get a modern and user friendly tool, particularly intended for younger population, after comprehensive research, we decided to adopt documentary animation as a new model of presenting facts, whilst applying modern technology for its user-friendly application and dissemination. The project contains 17 animated maps. The maps are organized in chronological order and in line with the methodologies adopted by institutions collecting and archiving documents related to Srebrenica genocide and genocide in general - as identified by number of respective studies. Each map has key points containing particular evidence (text files, photos, video clips).

History in the Making 2014-1914(1878)

THE CASE OF BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA - Case Study

Educational module for the School of Knowledge – a not-for-profit educational initiative whose aim is to bridge the gap between historic events and contemporary interpretations in an interactive composition. For decades, a war of interpretations has been waged across the Balkans. In the case of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with numerous special interests, it is easy to overlook the simplicity of the truth - which is clear when you consider only the facts.

Using a methodology of documentary animation the case of Bosnia and Herzegovina is observed in the historical context from 1878 to 2014. Starting with the Congress of Berlin at which Bosnia and Herzegovina was handed over to the Austro-Hungarian Empire rule; continuing with the Sarajevo assassination; the First World War; creation & capitulation of the first Yugoslavia; the Second World War; creation & the fall of the second Yugoslavia; Dayton Peace Accords agreement; post-Dayton Bosnia; and concluding with public protests of February 2014. Special emphasis is placed on the reconstruction of Sarajevo assassination event (28 June 1914).

History in the Making 2014-1914 (1878) is an educational project intended for an eclectic international audience: schools; academia; journalists; analysts / researchers; international organisations; NGOs; libraries & archives; educational-cultural sectors; visitors to Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina & Southeast Europe; and the general public.

The Siege of Sarajevo Museum - The Art of Living

Design and production of promotional video for “The Siege of Sarajevo Museum - The Art of Living 1992-1996” and live video mapping performance in Sarajevo, 05.04.2012.

The Siege of Sarajevo Museum – The Art of Living (FAMA Collection) project is launching a new way of interacting and learning about the phenomenon of the Siege of Sarajevo by focusing on the Art of Living. The Museum will be a unique depository of human knowledge – where human ingenuity, creativity and intelligence were captured amidst the urban post-cataclysmic realm. It is a heritage snap-shot of faces and voices that have shaped the longest siege in the modern history of mankind.

The objective is to bring the story of the Siege in juxtaposition with contemporary events, obstacles, fears and aspirations by mapping-out the facts, evidences, causes and consequences as educational reflections for 21st century. As such, the Museum aims to become a symbol and a monument to Human Mind – Achievement – Survival - Creativity – Ingenuity that was unveiled by Sarajevans during the four years of multi-level terror for the benefit of a global audience. This is evidence based project whose transfer of knowledge aims to equip individuals with capacity to respond to the 21st century Risk Society by inspiring them to seek meaning in their everyday lives. The Art of Living is today’s New Normal that can be learned and applied.

Sarajevo’s City Hall Re-Opening

Video mapping performance (09.05.2014.) made in cooperation with Knap Studio, projected on Sarajevo’s City Hall building in front of few thousand people. Extremely challenging, artistically and technically, but also morally, within only several minutes, this video depicts very specific and very powerful historical breakdowns that happened in Sarajevo and Bosnia and Herzegovina, pointing to the abundant and versatile cultural and historical heritage, encompassing the period from before the construction of the City Hall until today.

This video mapping illustrates the birth of progressive ideas and their everlasting struggles against the powers of darkness. These positive ideas are symbolized by the ray of light that is pushed back from time to time, only to reappear and dominate again, that never disappears, and always and again finds its way back.
